90s girl group, the Spice Girls, have added Ellesmere Port’s Whitby Sports & Social Club to their tour dates for 2019.
The Spice Girls, who will be performing without ‘Posh’ Victoria, recently announced dates for their reunion tour. However, the demand for tickets was so high that they’ve just added new dates to the tour schedule – including one in Ellesmere Port.
The Spice Girls are set to play three dates at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium at the end of May and the beginning of June next year. However, before they move on to dates at the Ricoh Arena and Wembley, they wanted to add an extra date closer to the home of Melanie Chisolm (Sporty) who was born in Whiston.
They originally wanted to use Anfield, the home of Liverpool Football Club, which already has a number of concerts lined up next year including Take That and Pink, but that venue was unavailable for the dates the girls wanted. Whitby Sports & Social Club was an obvious second choice, but by no means the lesser option according to Mel C:
I love the venue. I always used to drive past there on me way to Cheshire Oaks from Chester. It’s steeped in history. I can’t wait to play there.
For locals wanting tickets, the sports and social club’s own website has an email address on the contact page where you can enquire about availability. Fans of the Spice Girls are encouraged to act fast as demand is expected to be high, and the venue doesn’t have the capacity of Wembley.
Other events planned at Whitby Sports & Social Club include tribute acts of George Michael and Michael Jackson, and some British Wrestling.
Debbie, from Whitby Sports & Social Club, commented about the announcement:
Hosting the Spice Girls at our social club shows how we’re putting Ellesmere Port on the map. We’re in talks with Take That to also add a date here next year.
